Are you designing a solar project close to the ocean? Coastal environments are pretty harsh, so you’ll want to make sure you are asking questions about the longevity, safety, and engineering of the system. Here are some of the more frequent questions we get here at SolarDock about coastal projects (along with the answers):

  • What is your product made of? SolarDock is made of mill grade aluminum with stainless steel fasteners, and sits on 1” polystyrene insulation board.
  • How will those materials react with sea spray? While there may be some discoloration of the aluminum, the quality of metal used in SolarDock can withstand marine environments.
  • How long is your warranty? SolarDock’s warranty is 25 years. We believe the racking should last as long as your roof and your panels.
  • Tell me about your wind testing - how high can you go? We’ve been wind tunnel and CFL tested up to 150 mph.
  • I’m worried about making rooftop penetrations - are you still ballasted up to 150 mph? Yes. At SolarDock we believe in protecting your roof from damage and your property from leaks. That’s why we never penetrate the roof.
  • Do you provide signed and sealed engineering drawings? Yes, if you request them. And we’ll also work with your engineers to make sure that SolarDock is the right solution for your project.
Is this an exhaustive list of things to consider? Probably not. But it is a good starting point when looking at equipment for your coastal project. Want to add to this list? Then leave us a comment below!

About our experience: SolarDock’s first coastal project was in 2007 in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware and since then we’ve installed more than 19 MW of solar in areas of the East Coast impacted by hurricanes. All of these customers asked the tough questions above and came to the same conclusion - that SolarDock was the safest and most durable racking solution for their coastal project.
